Please take a moment to congratulate the students who participated in the first ever Debate Tournament between Graded and EAB over the weekend in Brasilia. Our students were well-prepared, persuasive in their speeches, and respectful of their opponents. Michael Borger, Mitch Herr, and Catu Berretta did some of the best debating we've seen from them. Catu Berretta took Third Speaker, Luiz de Campos took First Speaker, and the team of Lucas Auriemo, Nicky Ferreira, and Luiz de Campos took first place. The win in the final round, with only a half hour to prepare, was due to the whole team coming together to help them research their arguments. Great job everyone!

Students in Grade 9 History are now working on a research project on slavery. The end goal is to use a historical perspective on effective measures that helped end slavery in the past to interpret modern day slavery and then raise awareness. Students will be working as historians and using their conclusions to serve the community with more informed action ideas.

The projects will be soon available online and we expect it will generate thinking and discussion in our community!
In March and April, Fabian Nacer, a consultant for the Prevention of Drugs and Alcohol Use, came to speak about teenage drug use, to all of the Grade 9 and 10 students in their Health and Physical Education classes. Fabian grew up in Sao Paulo, in the neighborhood of Moema, and attended a private school. As a teen, he began experimenting with a wide range of drugs, including alcohol, marijuana and cocaine. He moved to the USA and when he returned to Brazil, and his addiction to cocaine and crack progressed, he eventually lived on the streets of Sao Paolo for six years, including the area colloquially known as ‘’Cracolândia.’’ After undergoing multiple rehab interventions, he finally overcame his drug addiction and today, he visits schools and institutions throughout Sao Paulo, as a specialist on drug addiction prevention. His detailed descriptions of his traumas and survival related to drug abuse, were extremely riveting for the Grade 9 and 10 students. Students openly asked Fabian multitudes of questions throughout his classroom discussions. Fabian spoke to students about the addiction process and how his behavior and habits with alcohol and marijuana use influenced his experimentation with other drugs. He also spoke about how drug use can change family and friendships, and the ability to enjoy other activities in life. Most importantly, he spoke to students about how drug use can affect one emotionally, socially and physically. By relating his own experiences, he challenged students about their own perspectives related to drug use, including the use of alcohol, marijuana and other illegal drugs. For more information about Fabian’s work, please visit his website.
The Futsal, Volleyball and Softball teams traveled to NR to compete in the 2014 Big 4 Tournament. The four day competition was intense for all of the student-athletes and it provided our students with valuable learning opportunities. The coaches and players are immersed in the tournament on team and individual levels. It's fascinating to watch the drama play on out so many fronts. While all 24 of the teams vie for a championship, only 6 are able to earn the 1st place trophy. Graded's teams played hard throughout the competition and we are very proud of our coaches and players.
At today's HS PTA Coffee approximately 35 parents dove into the topic of standards-based grading and we talked about the work that Graded's schoolwide Grading and Reporting Task Forces has been doing. The topic for this month's HS PTA Coffee is "Learning and Grades"and we'll be talking about the school's plans for improving grading and reporting for students. Over the past year a schoolwide Grading and Reporting task force has been studying standards-based grading and there are plans to change our practices starting next year. In this meeting we'll focus on helping parents better understand the following:

What is standards-based grading?

How does standards-based grading differ from Graded's current system in the high school?

What changes will students and parents notice in the future?

We hope that you will join us on Wednesday for this very important topic.

on various supports. Objects, photographs and paintings that explore the
boundaries of this support, will be displayed, becoming pure image. With participant

Of course, we believed them, but it was only when I heard the pure, strong, beautiful music being made by what looked like an ordinary group of teenage girls, that I really realized the importance of the AMIS program.

Ms. Mussete was supporting and helping us throughout the whole experience, giving us the opportunity to be there in the first place. If it weren’t for the incredible choir program and teacher, we wouldn't have experienced such a life changing festival. We were very well prepared for our performance and three of us even earned solos.

Another important aspect of the festival was making friends. We met new people from all over the world that we could relate to. The two members that had gone last year still kept in touch with the friends they made at the festival and this year was no different.

All of the AMIS music festivals are extremely competitive and this year around 500 auditions were sent. There was a record of 205 alto voice auditions this year and 4 of our students were accepted as altos. In order to be accepted it is not enough to just be good at singing, you have to be a truly dedicated music student. It was such accomplishment to have 6 students accepted into the Women’s Honor Choir this year since it is such a highly selective festival. Not only that, but three of the students were chosen for solos (53 girls auditioned in total) and 2 other girls were part of a soli.

Overall, this trip has not only enriched our musical and cultural knowledge, but it has created an unbreakable bond between 7 very different people. This trip was a life changing experience through which we have been able to grow so close. I think we can safely say, this experience is one we’ll never forget, and it is all part of the Graded Experience.
