Students participate on COP19 Virtual Town Hall Video Conference

A group of IB SL Physics students from Mr Cross' class participated in COP19 Virtual Town Hall Video Conference. The event was organized by Taking IT Global in conjunction with the UN Climate Change Conference  being held now in Warsaw, Poland. Through the video conference, students are connected with schools around the world, experts and College students on the ground from the Conference of Youth in Warsaw.

Parallel with the video conference, the Twitter hashtag #globalencounters was collecting questions and comments from the students. Our Graded school group tweeted from cellphones and were able to see the Twitter stream in a separate projector which was also used for just in time research on topics brought up in the conference like the oil sands in Canada. The Storify slideshow below shows some of the tweets from #globalencounters. Graded students were very excited to get their twitter questions answered live.

The next step for all the students in the IB Physics SL classes will be to revisit the #globalencounters stream, as well as #cop19, for a closer look on resources, questions , issues and expert connections. This work was a partnership between Mr Cross and the HS Academic Technology Coordinator, Mrs Meneghini.

Webinar: Graded students teach peers in Peru about ePortfolios

Our English 9 students interacted with Design Technology classes at Roosevelt, The American School of Lima, Peru, to share their experience with ePortfolios. This interaction happened in the form of a webinar over Skype, where students could not only see and hear each other over the webcam but also share the computer screen to show examples of ePortfolios. The English teacher, Dr. Geoffrey Carpenter, was responsible for organizing the webinars with the support of the Technology Coordinator, Dr. Silvana Meneghini. This collaborative project was the result of connections Dr. Carpenter made at the Innovate 2013 Conference.

Grade 9 English, together with HS Arts, have been pioneers in the exploration of individual student ePortfolios to serve as collection and reflection of learning, including artifacts that demonstrate the learning process and the final product. Students currently use Google Sites as a platform for creating the ePortfolios. During the webinar, students showed how their ePortfolios are organized, what type of work is displayed, how they address memory issues, and how they used cloud-based resources.

Enjoy snapshots of the webinars below!

Photography Students Participate in a Global Project

On Tuesday December 4th, the whole Photo II class met up to finally glue up the huge posters from
Inside Out, which was anything but an easy task. It included making the special glue from scratch out
of flour and water, spreading it all over the surface, aligning the posters, adding a second layer of glue
on top, and squeegeeing the entire thing. We had chosen three locations to put up the posters- in the
bus pick-up area, next to the Lower School library, and on the wall facing Giovanni Gronchi outside the
school. After the long process of taking photos of children from every grade, printing, scanning, getting
permission, sending them out, waiting, and finally displaying them to our community, it is safe to say
that the Inside Out Project was a success in our school and was well worth all the hard work.
